  • Palmer scores 16-minute hat-trick
  • Treble sinks struggling Everton
  • Fans impressed on social media

WHAT HAPPENED?

Palmer opened the scoring on 13 minutes at Stamford Bridge with a left-footed shot placed into the bottom corner. His second just five minutes after was a close-range header, before completing the treble with his right from distance after catching Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford way off his line. In total, only 16 minutes separated his first from his third. Things then got even better after the break, as Palmer scored his fourth from the penalty spot.

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Noah Kahan called on the club to tie down for a long time: “Ice cole, Chelsea sign him for a decade.”

Best in the league? @geetrinty on X thinks so: “Cole Palmer is setting the Premier League on fire! With skill, passion, and determination, he’s proving why he’s the best player in the league right now.”

Blues fan Adi posted: “Cole Palmer hat-trick in 16 minutes. Chelsea fans have waited so long for a player like him.”

Self-confessed sports fanatic ZoePicks, added: “NGL Chelsea hit a pit of gold with that Cole Palmer signing this season.” [sic]

Ashley just said: “Cole palmer is ridiculous.”

Man Utd supporter Wyclef Presley even seemed to retract ever doubting Palmer at this level: “Maybe I Was Wrong With Cole Palmer, MAYBE! Boy Is On Fire.”

WHAT THE PUNDITS & JOURNALISTS & PLAYERS ARE SAYING

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher wrote on X: “Cole Palmer was nailed on for YPOTY, how close is he to POTY?!!”

Gary Lineker added: “He’s exceptionally talented is Cole Palmer.”

Chelsea team-mate Romeo Lavia said: “This is getting stupid now! MR COLD PALMER.”

The Athletic’s Duncan Alexander pointed out: “PL goals since the start of March…Cole Palmer 9-9 Liverpool.”

Nizaar Kinsella of the Evening Standard chimed in: “Cole Palmer is special. He has scored in seven successive home league games, making him the first player to achieve that feat for Chelsea. Not seen a single player carry Chelsea like this since Eden Hazard.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Palmer has been carrying an otherwise poor and disjointed Chelsea team this season. He scored a hat-trick in the 4-3 comeback win over Manchester United earlier this month and went one better by bagging four against Everton. Palmer is now level with Erling Haaland at the top of the goalscoring charts in the Premier League with 20.

DID YOU KNOW?

Palmer’s first goal of the night took him onto 20 for the season in all competitions, the first Chelsea player to reach that mark since Eden Hazard in 2018/19 – and the first Englishman to do it for the Blues since Frank Lampard, who finished on 27, in 2009/10.

WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA AND PALMER

It was only recently that Chelsea looked destined to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League for the second season running. But Palmer’s form has inspired a rise up the standings to now go within three points of sixth place Newcastle with a game in hand and put European qualification very much in reach. Their destiny is largely in their own hands too, with games against fourth place Aston Villa, fifth place Tottenham and eighth place West Ham to come over the next few weeks. Next up, though, is an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley on April 20.
