Christian Pulisic’s goal for AC Milan against Lecce signifies that he has now surpassed every Chelsea player in terms of open-play goals this season.

Pulisic scored the opening goal in the match against Lecce in Serie A, leaving his former club Chelsea somewhat embarrassed. The star player for the United States men’s national team has now tallied 10 open-play goals and six assists, while Chelsea’s leading scorer from open play this season is Nicolas Jackson with nine goals. Despite in-form Cole Palmer scoring 16 goals, only seven of them are from open play.

In the broader context, Chelsea permitted Pulisic to depart for around €20m (£17m/$21m) last summer, and he has since rediscovered the form he exhibited while playing for Borussia Dortmund. Additionally, he remains a crucial player for the USMNT as they prepare for the Copa America and their upcoming home 2026 World Cup campaign.

Interestingly, Milan currently occupies the second spot in Serie A and appears likely to maintain that position, trailing leaders Inter by 11 points and leading third-placed Juventus by nine points. Conversely, Chelsea finds itself in 11th place in the Premier League, although they have an FA Cup semi-final fixture against Manchester City on the horizon.

Looking ahead, Pulisic, alongside Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao, contributed to a comfortable victory against Lecce. They are set to face Roma in an all-Italian Europa League quarter-final clash on April 11. For Pulisic, it has been an exceptional debut season in Serie A, where he has seamlessly adapted and demonstrated remarkable comfort in his new environment.
