Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has directed criticism towards Gabriel Jesus, suggesting that the Brazilian international must enhance his consistency to attain the status of a top-tier player.

Jesus made a transfer from Manchester City to Arsenal in 2022, with the 26-year-old aiming to fill the void created by the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette during that summer.

However, his debut season for the Gunners saw him only manage to score 11 league goals across all competitions. In the current season, Jesus has found the net just four times in the Premier League and has also faced spells on the sidelines due to injury.

During a conversation with his former player Freddie Ljungberg for Viaplay Sports, Wenger commented on Arsenal’s situation and Jesus’s performance, stating, “At the moment, they do not possess a Thierry Henry, as I believe Gabriel Jesus is frequently injured.”

He continued, “There is more potential for goals in him than what is currently being seen. What distinguishes the top-tier players is consistency. Those who leave a lasting impact are the ones who maintain a consistent presence. Ronaldo and Messi, for instance, have played consistently for 15 years, featuring in 50 to 60 games annually.”
