Barcelona's Pursuit of a New Left Winger: Tracking Nico Williams and Alternatives

Barcelona Eyes New Left Winger Amid Uncertainty over Nico Williams

Barcelona’s quest for a new left winger for the upcoming season continues, with Joao Felix having been utilized in that role this season with mixed results. While Bryan Zaragoza was initially considered, the latest reports indicate that Barcelona is still keeping tabs on Nico Williams.

Despite Williams signing a contract extension with Athletic Club until 2026, Barcelona’s interest persists. Initially, it was thought that Barcelona would not pursue Williams after his contract renewal, as they were hoping to acquire him on a free transfer. However, recent speculation has linked Williams with Aston Villa and Liverpool, with Chelsea and Arsenal emerging as the most probable destinations.

Despite these rumors, Barcelona reportedly maintains communication with Williams’ representatives and closely monitors the 21-year-old’s situation. They understand that acquiring Williams would come with a hefty price tag of at least €50 million, necessitating significant player sales before any potential move. Williams shares a close bond with several Barcelona players, including Alejandro Balde, and would consider joining the club, although he remains content at Athletic and is not pushing for a transfer.

Zaragoza remains a potential alternative, with Sporting Director Deco exploring the possibility of securing him on loan. However, Barcelona’s focus on addressing the left-wing position appears to be secondary to resolving the midfield vacancy left by Sergio Busquets before making any final decisions.
