After months of anticipation, the public learned of the acquisition of the team by 71-year-old magnate Sir Jim Ratcliffe through a club statement released in December.

Ratcliffe, along with his INEOS Group, invested nearly £1 billion to acquire a 27.7% stake in the club. With an additional expenditure of £238 million, their ownership stake is set to reach close to 30%.

Furthermore, the INEOS conglomerate possesses ownership of Nice, a French football team currently positioned in fifth place in Ligue 1, poised for European competitions.

Despite revisions to its regulations, UEFA has formally confirmed that teams under the same ownership cannot compete in the same tournament. This information was validated by a UEFA insider in response to inquiries from SunSport.

“It’s accurate that Manchester United and Nice cannot participate in the same tournament. However, they are eligible to partake in different competitions, as there is no inter-competition linkage anymore.”
